Pulsatile tinnitus expert, Dr. Dorothea Altschul answers the question ‘Is pulsatile tinnitus dangerous?’ The answer is: sometimes, but often it’s not. She elaborates that pulsatile tinnitus is different from the typical ringing in the ears because it’s synchronized with your heartbeat, which means there may be a vascular cause. In many patients, the cause is a narrowing of the veins that drain the brain. While that condition isn’t usually life threatening, it can significantly affect quality of life and may be associated with increased pressure inside the skull. In other cases, pulsatile tinnitus can be the first sign of a more serious condition such as an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein or, more rarely, an aneurysm or a vascular tumor, which is why it’s important not to ignore the symptoms.

Most causes of pulsatile tinnitus are treatable, but the first step is getting the right evaluation and imaging to identify what is behind the sound.
