Dr. Dorothea Altschul explains that the heartbeat sound in your ear is actually a condtion called pulsatile tinnitus. As a pulsatile tinnitus expert, Dr. Altschul explains the condtion and how it usually is only in one ear, not both. She further explains that it’s caused by a narrowing of one of the large veins that drains blood from the brain, and that the turbulent blood flow creates a sound that your ear can actually detect. Other causes might include abnormalities of arteries or veins, increased pressure inside the skull, or in rarer cases, vascular tumors. The good news is that pulsatile tinnitus is often treatable if they are evaulated with the right imaging- not just a hearing test.
