What actually causes tinnitus?

After working with 700+ people, I keep coming back to 3 main categories.
Hearing loss or auditory damage

This is the most common one. Age-related hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, acoustic trauma, ear infections, or certain medications. In my case it was noise-induced – too many clubs as a teenager without ear protection.

Stress, anxiety, or nervous system activation
Your nervous system plays a huge role in how tinnitus develops and how much it bothers you.

Physical factors

Tension in the neck, jaw, and surrounding muscles can be a significant driver that many people overlook.

Most people want a single clean answer. But tinnitus rarely works that way.

Understanding which category or combination applies to you is the first step toward finding what actually helps you habituate.
