Is a real tinnitus cure coming? Here’s what AC102, Auricle, ebselen, TMS, and Lenire’s actual trial data show — not the internet version.
A patient recently sat across from me with a folder of conflicting printouts on tinnitus research — one said a cure was two years out, another said nothing works. Instead of another headline, here’s what each trial actually found.

Four tinnitus treatments are in active research — AC102, Auricle, and two Gateway Biotechnology programs — but none are available in a clinic yet. Ebselen (SPI-1005) is showing real promise, but only for tinnitus tied to Meniere’s disease. TMS has mixed short-term results that don’t hold up at six months, which is why the AAO-HNS guideline recommends against it. Lenire — FDA De Novo approved since March 2023 — is already available and still underused.

Tinnitus research moves slowly, but the way it’s reported online moves fast, and something gets lost in between: a patient count changes, a disease-specific result gets generalized, an animal study gets described like it’s already helping people. For patients across Utah County and the Wasatch Front, that gap matters — a real, FDA-approved option already exists, and most people evaluating their choices online never hear about it.
Dr. Layne Garrett, Au.D., FAAA, CH-TM, is the founder of Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus, Utah’s only full-time tinnitus specialty center. He has spent more than two decades specializing in tinnitus and complex hearing loss, with an approach grounded in neuroscience, outcome tracking, and whole-person care. Dr. Garrett uses Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for tinnitus, and Progressive Tinnitus Management, and Timpanogos is Utah’s only standalone full-time Lenire provider, and one of a small number of Lenire Preferred Providers nationally. Every hearing aid fitting includes Real Ear Measurement verification. Timpanogos serves patients throughout Northern Utah, Utah County, and the Wasatch Front, working alongside ENTs, neurologists, and mental health professionals as needed.
