A real patient story and a live conversation about pulsatile tinnitus and its surgical causes.

Mini Gupta sits down with a surgeon and an audiologist from the United States who worked alongside her on one patient’s case. Together they treated a woman who had lived with pulsatile tinnitus in her right ear for four years. She had seen specialist after specialist, and the answer was always the same: not much could be done. A telehealth consultation across two continents changed that. It led to a referral, the referral led her to the right surgeon, and after surgery the sound was gone.

We will start with how this came together as a team, and what made the difference for her. Then Mini talks with audiologist Dr Morgan Bowlin about the case and the wider picture, and puts a set of questions to surgeon Dr Richard Gurgel that most of us can rarely get answered anywhere: superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD), patulous Eustachian tube and the other surgical causes of pulsatile tinnitus. How are they found? When does surgery help, and when should we be sending a patient for a surgical opinion?

This is a must-attend for anyone in clinical practice, surgeons, ENTs, GPs and audiologists alike. Bring your questions.

Meet the panel:
Dr Richard Gurgel (United States) is Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Utah, where he leads otology, neurotology and skull base surgery as division chief and fellowship director. He has written more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and several standard textbooks in the field, and is associate editor of The Laryngoscope.

Dr Morgan Bowlin (United States) is a Doctor of Audiology in Idaho. She looks after people with hearing loss and tinnitus, and believes strongly in clinicians working together across disciplines.

Mini Gupta is a Specialist Audiologist in tinnitus and sound sensitivity, and founder of All Ears Hearing & Tinnitus Clinic in Melbourne. She trained in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy under Pawel and Margaret Jastreboff.
