Can Tinnitus Go Away? It Depends on What’s Causing It

Can tinnitus actually go away? Sometimes, yes. It depends on what’s causing or contributing to it.

Tinnitus after a loud concert may settle on its own. If impacted earwax is contributing, removing the blockage may help. And if tinnitus started after beginning a new medication, talk with your prescriber—but never stop a medication on your own.

When tinnitus has been present for months or years, however, we often shift the focus from trying to make the sound disappear to tinnitus habituation.

Habituation happens when your brain stops treating tinnitus as important or threatening. You may still be able to hear it, but you notice it less often, react to it less, and eventually it can stop controlling your day.

That’s what happened to me. I’ve had tinnitus since 2007, and today I rarely notice it.

Want to understand how tinnitus habituation works and what you can do to encourage it? Head over to my YouTube channel, Tinnitus with Maria, where I have longer educational videos that go much deeper into tinnitus management.
