Do you hear a whooshing, swishing or throbbing sound inside your ear/head? Does it seem to match your heartbeat? It is especially worse when you lay down at night? It sounds like water is flowing near your ear?

This is often referred to as pulsatile tinnitus. Pulsatile tinnitus can happen when blood flow TO and FROM the brain is impeded. This change in blood flow can be due to high blood pressure, of plaque in blood vessels or structural issues.

The two most common structural issues leading to pulsatile tinnitus are:
1. A shift, misalignment of the Atlas (C1) vertebra
2. An elongated styloid process.

In a lot of cases, an elongated styloid process will not cause issues. It is estimated that 30%-40% of the population have at least one styloid process that is elongated.

The problem commonly arises when, in addition to an elongated styloid, there is a structural misalignment, a shift, of the Atlas vertebra. This shift, in a rotational manner, can compress blood vessels such as the internal carotid artery or the internal jugular vein, against a styloid process.

We take care of this structural issue by measuring the degree of misalignment of the Atlas and then gently adjusting it to a more neutral position.
