**Warning – tinnitus trigger sounds** 🔔

Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a sound when there is no external source for that sound. It’s often a buzzing, whistling, ringing or even musical notes. It can be constant, or come and go. It often gets worse under stress, and when you’re short of sleep.

What I’d never realised, until it started for me, is that it may be a symptom of perimenopause/menopause.. although the evidence is still shaky, and the mechanisms are unclear.

Tinnitus varies hugely in severity from person to person. For me, simply understanding that it was a phantom sound, constructed by my brain, made it easier for me to ignore it. When it first started, it was pretty horrid.. especially at bedtime. White noise, pink noise or a fan may help – I find ear plugs helpful, but some people may find they make things worse.

Positively, according to the article at least, there are a number of new treatments being explored which could have implications for both tinnitus, and hearing loss – e.g. Lenire has a device to stimulate the tongue while playing tinnitus-like sounds, to try and reduce overactivity in the cochlear nucleus.

Tinnitus affects 1 in 10 of us, and I suspect many are suffering in silence. If you’re struggling with tinnitus, discuss it with your doctor – there are lots of things you can do. The treatments currently with the best evidence are hearing aids and cognitive behavioural therapy. There is also lots of useful information on the Tinnitus UK website – https://tinnitus.org.uk/
