There are many possible causes of tinnitus, and in some cases, the cause is unknown.
1. Noise-induced hearing loss. There are tiny, delicate hair cells in your inner ear (cochlea) that move when your ear receives sound waves. This movement triggers electrical signals along the nerve from your ear to your brain (auditory nerve). Your brain interprets these signals as sound. Exposure to loud noises, such as music concerts or construction work, can damage the hair cells in the inner ear and lead to tinnitus.
2. Earwax blockage. Earwax is a normal and healthy part of the ear, but sometimes it can build up and block the ear canal creating pressure in the ear, and leading to tinnitus.
3. Ear infections. An infection in the ear canal or middle ear can cause inflammation and fluid buildup, leading to tinnitus.
4. Medications. A number of medications such as aspirin and certain antibiotics, painkillers, etc may cause or worsen tinnitus. Generally, the higher the dose of these medications, the worse tinnitus becomes. Often the unwanted noise disappears when you stop using these drugs.
5. Age-related hearing loss. For many people, hearing gets worse as you age. This usually begins around 60 and usually affects both ears. As we get older, the hair cells in the inner ear can become damaged, leading to hearing loss and tinnitus.
6. Other conditions. Tinnitus can also be a symptom of conditions such as high blood pressure, anemia, and Meniere’s disease.
