What is this pulsating red mass in the left middle ear? It is a glomus jugulare tumor, a slow-growing benign tumor that originates from neural crest derivatives. This type of tumor is known as a paraganglioma. Other types include carotid body tumors, glomus tympanicum, and glomus vagale. In rare cases, 1-3% can secrete catecholamines that cause excessive sweating and facial flushing. This patient’s only symptom was pulsating tinnitus or ringing. If you have a patient with pulsatile tinnitus, they should be referred to an ENT provider.
