🤔 What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in one or both ears or in your head that has no external source. It’s often described as a ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, or whooshing sound. Tinnitus is a very common problem, affecting about 15-20% of people at some point in their lives. It’s not a disease itself, but a symptom of an underlying condition.

👉 Types of Tinnitus

There are two main types of tinnitus:

✅ Subjective tinnitus: This is the most common type of tinnitus, and it can only be heard by the person who has it. It’s caused by a problem with the way the auditory system works.
✅ Objective tinnitus: This is a much rarer type of tinnitus, and it can be heard by both the person who has it and by another person, usually a doctor using a stethoscope. It’s caused by a physical problem in the ear, such as a blood vessel problem or muscle movement.

There are also two other less common types of tinnitus:

✅ Neurological tinnitus: This type of tinnitus is caused by a problem in the part of the brain that processes sound.
✅ Somatic tinnitus: This type of tinnitus is caused by a problem in the muscles or joints near the ear.

👉 Causes of Tinnitus

There are many different things that can cause tinnitus, including:
🔷 Hearing loss
🔷 Noise exposure
🔷 Earwax buildup
🔷 Some medications
🔷 Head and neck injuries
🔷 Medical conditions like Meniere’s disease, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and some blood vessel disorders

👉 Symptoms of Tinnitus

The main symptom of tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head that has no external source. The sound can be ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, or whooshing. It can be constant or intermittent, and it can vary in loudness.

Tinnitus can also cause other symptoms, such as:
🔷 Hearing loss
🔷 Ear fullness or pressure
🔷 Difficulty concentrating
🔷 Dizziness or vertigo (spinning sensation)
🔷 Trouble sleeping due to the bothersome sounds
🔷 Anxiety or stress due to the tinnitus itself
🔷 Depression

There is no specific test for tinnitus. However, a ENT doctor can diagnose tinnitus by asking you about your symptoms and doing a physical examination of your ears. The doctor may also order some tests, such as a hearing test, to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.

There is no cure for tinnitus, but there are treatments such as sound therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), hearing aids, medication and tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) that can help manage the symptoms.
