The exact mechanism of tinnitus is complex and not fully understood. However, several theories and findings have emerged: The first being Neural Hyperactivity which is damage to the auditory system that can lead to altered neural activity in the brain’s auditory cortex, where sounds are processed. This can cause the brain to perceive nonexistent sounds.

The 2nd is Neuroplastic Changes where the brain undergoes changes in response to hearing loss or ear damage. It’s suggested that the brain tries to compensate for the loss of auditory input, which can inadvertently activate neurons that generate tinnitus sounds.

In summary the mechanisms of tinnitus are: Damage to your auditory system and then the body tries to repair that system to make it stronger, kind of like building up muscle after workouts, that then leads to it being too strong.
