Anne Sommer is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University. In this video, she explains why ears ring after loud events, at what level sounds become dangerous and what can be done to keep ears healthy. Sommer says that after attending a loud concert, many people report a temporary loss of hearing and ringing in their ears. Exposure to loud sound damages delicate hair cells in the inner ear, which can lead to ringing in the ears or tinnitus. Sound levels at a music concert can range between 80-120 decibels. Sommer says that listening to music over 100 decibels can cause inner ear damage in only 15 minutes. Over time, repeated exposure to loud sounds can result in permanent hearing loss. Sommer says properly fitted earplugs are an effective way to protect ears from loud sounds, reducing the risk of hearing loss and tinnitus.
