What is pulsatile tinnitus?
Pulsatile tinnitus can be described as a “whooshing” sound, a siren, or a pulse that is in rhythm with one’s heartbeat. It is different from “regular tinnitus” in that pulsatile tinnitus is typically caused by abnormal blood flow through a person’s arteries or veins. People with pulsatile tinnitus should start by consulting their primary care physician for imaging studies to see if it can be properly diagnosed with an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI.
What causes pulsatile tinnitus?
The most common cause of pulsatile tinnitus is intracranial hypertension, and it can be associated with other symptoms such as obesity, sleep apnea, diabetes, thyroid issues, anemia, and even pregnancy. A good way to know if pulsatile tinnitus is more vein-based or artery-based is to see if it attenuates – or gets lower – with jugular vein compression.
Does the pulsing decrease if you press on the sides of your neck?
If it does, it is likely vein-based.
If it does not, it is likely artery-based
An ultrasound of the carotid artery is a good place to start. Once diagnosed properly, a patient with pulsatile tinnitus can determine the best treatment options available to them with the help of their physician and audiologist who specializes in tinnitus.
