Ear pain or ringing that won’t go away? It’s NOT always an ear problem.
Sometimes the issue starts with the muscles that support your neck.
Here’s what’s really happening…
The deep neck flexors help support your head and maintain normal posture. When they’re weak, your head drifts forward and other muscles have to compensate.
One of those muscles—the SCM—can become overworked and develop trigger points that refer pain around the ear.
Forward head posture can also increase compression around the upper neck, which may contribute to ear symptoms in some people.
So what does this mean for treatment?
DON’T assume every ear symptom starts in the ear.
STEP 1: Strengthen your deep neck flexors (AS SHOWN IN VIDEO) with chin tuck holds to improve neck stability.
STEP 2: Progress to resisted chin tucks to build strength through different angles and improve endurance.
STEP 3: Release and stretch the SCM to reduce muscle tension that may be contributing to referred pain.
If your ears have been checked and everything came back normal, it may be worth looking beyond the ear itself. Sometimes restoring normal neck muscle function can make a big difference.
