Most tinnitus is related to hearing loss and isn’t a medical emergency.

But there are a few situations where getting evaluated quickly is important.

1. Pulsatile tinnitus
If the sound matches your heartbeat, it may be related to blood flow near the ear. While many causes are benign, some require medical evaluation.

2. Tinnitus in only one ear
Persistent ringing in one ear should be assessed by an audiologist and often an ENT physician. Most cases are not serious, but it’s important to rule out uncommon conditions that may need treatment.

3. Tinnitus with sudden hearing loss
If you notice ringing along with a sudden decrease in hearing in one or both ears, seek medical care immediately. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is considered an otologic emergency, and treatment is most effective when started as soon as possible- ideally within the first 72 hours.

The good news is that the vast majority of tinnitus is not an emergency, but knowing when to act can make all the difference.
